International exchange
events in IT were held during the ITU Telecom Asia 2004

The ITU Telecom Asia 2004 co-hosted by the Ministry of Information and
Communication and the International Telecommunication Union was held in
BEXCO in Pusan, Korea form September 6 through September 11, 2004. The
latest international event contributed to promoting Korea as an IT powerhouse
to the world and global investment in IT through international exchanges.
During the international event, the 8th Advanced Network Workshop and
2004 Asian Digital Heritage Exchange Forum were hosted by the MIC and
organized by KISDI.
On September 7, 2004, Joint Plenary Session of the ANW and DHX was held
in a conference room of the main building of Bukyung University. Prominent
scholars and gurus including President of Bukyung University Joohi Lee,
President of ETRI Joowhan Lim, President of KISTI Youngwha Cho, and President
of the ANF Daeyoung Kim attended the plenary session. Also, industry experts
from China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the session.

In his opening speech, KISDI President Lee said, "These two events are
good examples of international cooperation using advanced network. I hope
that experts at home and abroad will share their thoughts on how to develop
advanced network and digital cultural heritage in the long term."
In his welcoming speech, Vice-President of Bukyung University Joohi Lee
said, "It is significant that ANW and DHX forum are being held in
Bukyung University during the ITU Telecom Asia 2004. I hope that these
events will lay the foundation for Korea to gain international competitiveness
not only in telecoms but also in application fields."
At the joint plenary session, Artur Serra, a professor at Catalona University
in Spain, Wu Jianping, a professor at Chingwha University in China and
director of CERNET, and Michael Wellings, a professor at Washington University
in the U.S. and director of Internet2 ResearchChannel made a remote presentation
using advanced network. They transmitted high quality digital cultural
heritage images in America, Europe, and China to the audience making the
events more meaningful.

■ 8th Advanced Network Workshop
The 8th Advanced Network Workshop, which was hosted by the Ministry of
Information and Communication and co-organized by KISDI APII Cooperation
Center, KISTI, NCA, ANF, and KT, was held in the main building of Bukyung
University in Pusan, Korea from September 7 through September 8, 2004.

This latest event was designed to review progress in research and application
of advanced network including KOREN, KREONET, APII Testbed, and TEIN and
to promote researchers around the world to share thoughts on how to develop
and take advantage of advanced network in the future.
The workshop drew lots of experts of advanced network technology, environment,
meteorology, Telescience, life science, medicine, and aerospace from around
the world.
The workshop consisted of four sessions: the current status of advanced
network at home and abroad and the application of the network by area,
the current status of BcN and how to promote the use of BcN, next generation
internet technology and application technology, and Grid and eScience
and their application.
Working group and task force meetings were held and HDTV demo was provided.
HD quality digital cultural heritage images were displayed using APII-Testbed
and TEIN catching the eye of the audience in the Korea's pavilion at BEXCO,
the primary exhibition site of ITU Telecom Asia 2004.
Among the images were Korea's traditional dance performance and marching
of Buddhists holding lotus-shaped lamps in their hands to celebrate the
birth of Buddha and various cultural images of the U.S. and Spain. This
set a good example of international cooperation using advanced network.
■ 2004 Asian DHX Forum
2004 Asian DHX Forum, which was hosted by the Ministry of Information
and Communication and organized by KISDI, was held in the main building
of Bukyung University on September 7, 2004.

This forum was designed to creating a consensus on digitalizing cultural
heritage using cutting-edge technology across the Asian region and promoting
international cooperation to this end. Experts and scholars from Korea,
China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the workshop reviewing
the progress in digitalizing cultural heritage and discussing long-term
plans.
In his speech on International Cooperation to Digitalize Asian Cultural
Heritage, Professor Hyun Kim of the Academy of Korean Studies proposed
that Asian countries recognize the need to develop a long-term plan and
cooperate with one another in research and survey.
KISDI's International Research and Cooperation Group Director Inuk Chung
said, "Digitalizing cultural heritage will be an important issue
in the future. Bur, now, there is no international standard to categorize
tangible or intangible and past or modern cultural assets. Each country
has its own standard. Therefore, we need to continue to exchange thoughts
and explore common plans and goals to promote DHX project."
