The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, Acting President Kim Jung-un) held “the 2024 Symposium on Solutions to ICT-based Social Challenges” on the theme of “The Value of Labor-friendly AI and Social Challenges” at Melon Hall of Seoul Sportime on Friday, November 1 both online and offline.

Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and ICT, this symposium focused on diagnosing the impact of advances in AI on the economic and non-economic value of human labor, and explored the value of labor-friendly AI. Experts from industry, academia, and research in the fields of technology, industry and economy, and social policies joined the symposium as presenters and panelists to discuss the social challenges posed by AI and desirable means of responding to such challenges in order to ensure sustainable coexistence between AI and humans from a multidisciplinary perspective.

During Session 1, which was centered on the need for discussions on labor-friendly AI, the speakers delivered presentations on “AI and Job Transformation: The Need for a Labor-Friendly Response” and “An Analysis of Demand for Patented Data-based Future Jobs”.

Moon A-ram, a researcher at KISDI, spoke about “AI and Job Transformation: The Need for a Labor-Friendly Response”. In her presentation, she shared the findings of her analysis of how AI impacts job transformation within the labor market, based on the level of exposure to AI by type of job and the “substitutability” indicator, and emphasized the need for a labor-friendly approach to the introduction and use of AI.

Ha Tae-hyeon, a professor of Sejong University, gave a presentation on “An Analysis of Demand for Patent Data-based Future Jobs” and presented a methodology for analyzing the prospects for patent-based jobs.

In Session 2, which focused on “Social Challenges for Labor-Friendly AI”, the speakers talked about “The Present and Future of Advances in AI: Changes, Opportunities, and Challenges in Competency by Industry”, “Status and Challenges in the Development of AI Professionals: with a Focus on LG’s AI Academy” and “An Analysis of Demand for Skills Value Chain-based AI Skills: with a Focus on Online AI Job Ads”.
 
In his presentation titled “The Present and Future of Advances in AI: Changes, Opportunities, and Challenges in Competency by Industry,” Sim Hong-jin, a researcher at KISDI, explained the findings of his study, in which various types of AI recipients were analyzed, based on the results of a survey on how far AI has penetrated different industries and how job competencies have evolved as a result. Sim also reviewed various ethical challenges and policy responses associated with the use of AI in various industries including media, IT, and manufacturing.

In her presentation titled “Status and Challenges in the Development of AI Professionals: with a Focus on LG’s AI Academy,” Kim Hyang-mi, a team leader at LG AI Research, listed the qualities and qualifications corporations require of their employees and introduced the AI experts training system run by LG’s AI Academy for its employees and external trainees.

Lee Hyeon-gyung, an associate researcher at KISDI, shared the findings of her analysis of demand for AI skills with a focus on online job ads in Korea, and offered suggestions for a new training model designed to help nurture a broader population of skills value chain-based AI professionals.

The presentations were followed by a wrap-up discussion on “Social Challenges and Policy Direction for Labor-Friendly AI” led by Choi Chung, a professor at Konkuk University. Kim Dong-gyu, a researcher at the Korea Employment Information Service, and Jeong Nak-won, a professor at Seoul Women's University attended the discussion.
