The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Acting Chairperson Kim Tae-kyu) and the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, Acting President Kim Jung-un) jointly held the 2024 AI Service User Protection Conference on Monday, September 30, 2024 in order to discuss ways to protect the rights of AI service users in the fast-changing broadcasting and communication media environment amid rapidly-evolving AI technology, and to propose potential policy responses.

The conference consisted of two sessions.

The first session opened with the keynote presentation by Professor Yoon Hye-sun of Hanyang University on “User Protection in the Era of AI: Challenges and Opportunities”, followed by individual presentations by experts from academia and industry who offered diverse perspectives.

The first speaker, Cho Seung-eun, a fellow researcher at KISDI, explained the process of developing “the guidelines for generative AI user protection” and the highlights. Next, Professor Lee Daeho of Sungkyungwan University spoke about the implications regarding the development of an AI service user protection policy, based on an empirical study on user experiences. Lastly, Jooyoung HA, an attorney at ScatterLab, talked about user protection policy from a business’ perspective and introduced cases of AI service providers’ experiences, bringing a fresh perspective to discussions on the development of a user protection policy.

During the second session, held in a roundtable format, experts engaged in lively discussions. Chaired by professor Kim Myeong-Ju of Seoul Women’s University, the roundtable featured active discussions by the panelists, including Sung-Chul Kim, a professor at Korea University, Sung Wook-jun, a professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Sun Ji-won, a professor at Hanyang University, Lee Hee-ok, senior manager of Naver Corp., Hwang Da-yeon, CEO of Together with Consumers, and Moon Jung-wook, senior manager at KISDI.

The KCC announced its intention to develop policies and regulations aimed at securing AI trustworthiness and to protect users from the adverse effects of AI, based on diverse opinions and ideas discussed at the conference, so as to better prepare for the new era of AI currently unfolding before our eyes.
