The IBCC, currently in its 9th year, has been co-hosted by KCC and KISDI every year since 2016 to promote cross-border broadcasting co-production and raise interest in K-content.
This year’s conference consisted of a keynote speech, a special session for the country of honor, the 2024 International Broadcasting Co-Production Awards Ceremony, and a number of theme-based sessions. The keynote speech was delivered by Yasu Nagahata, Director of Programming at ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union), on the theme of “International Co-production Projects of the ABU Programme Department.”
Mongolia was featured in the special session for the Country of Honor. Korea and Mongolia are currently engaged in negotiations for the Economic Partnership Agreement, and recent days have seen an increase in bilateral exchanges and collaboration in the content sector. The special session was initiated by Sukhbold Sukhee, the Mongolian Ambassador to Korea, followed by a congratulatory speech by Zolbayar Enkhbayar, Director-General of the Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) of Mongolia. Presentations were given by Bolorkhuu Namsraijav, who discussed “CRC and Broadcasting Regulations in Mongolia” and Gerel Gankhuyag, CEO of the Mongolian National Broadcaster (MNB), who spoke about “Content Creation and International Collaboration at MNB.”
The first afternoon session included vivid descriptions of the co-production processes and experiences of the 2024 International Broadcasting Co-Production Best Program Awardee and the project selected from the 2023 International Broadcasting Co-Production Support Program. First, CJ ENM and DOFALA Inc., the awardees for the Best Program and Second Prize, respectively, presented their processes from planning to production and shared their experiences in entering overseas markets. This was followed by a presentation by Jang Kyung-soo, Deputy Executive Producer at SBS, on the production and support process for “War in School,” the project selected for the 2023 International Broadcasting Co-Production Support Program.
During Theme-Based Session 1, led by Lee Jae-shin, professor at Chung-Ang University, the main presentations were delivered by Jung Han, CEO of K-EnterTech Hub, and Ed Waller, Editorial Director at C21 Media. Their followed their presentations, titled “In the Age of AI and Streaming, a New Chapter in Global Co-Creation and Collaboration Opens Up” and “The Growth of International Co-Production, respectively, with a discussion with panelists on how to incorporate innovative digital technologies into the content production process.
During Theme-Based Session 2, led by Kenny Kihyung Bae, Senior Producer at KBS, Oh-Young Hwang, Director at JTBC, delivered a presentation titled “A Strategy for Expanding Global Co-Productions Based on Successful Case Studies.” Pablo Mancuso, CEO of Accion Group in Argentina, delivered a presentation about “Latin America & Korea: A Bridge to Build for the Future of Co-Productions.” Finally, the session concluded with a discussion among experts on future forecasts and strategies for successful co-production.
In his opening remarks, Sung-Eun Cho, Secretary-General of the KCC, stated, “Customized contents are offered via new platforms, big data, and algorithms. As such, various new technologies, along with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence, are completely shifting the paradigm for the planning, production, distribution and consumption of contents.” He finished by saying, “I hope that the 2024 IBCC will serve as an important turning point for exploring innovative ideas and laying the groundwork for new collaboration in the co-production of high-quality contents amid the rapid pace of technological change and innovation.
