On June 24 (Monday), the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, President Kim Dae-hui) hosted the 5th KISDI colloquium of 2019 on the topic of “The US-China Trade War and South Korea’s Strategic Options” at the mid-sized conference room on the 2nd floor of KISDI’s main building.
Professor Wang Yoon-jong of Kyunghee University is an expert in the global economy who built his career as a researcher at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy and the SK Research Institute for SUPEX Management. He is currently the host of the Maeil Economy TV program Dr. Wang’s Global Economy.
In his lecture, he discussed the US-China trade war, explaining how the US views China and the situation of the US manufacturing industry, President Trump’s China trade policy, and the focus of the tariff wars. He explained the background to the US’s decision to engage in a trade war and its prohibition of doing business with Chinese company Huawei.
He then offered some ideas on the kinds of strategies and policies South Korea could adopt as a country sandwiched between China and the US.
In 2019, KISDI will continue to hold such colloquiums to respond to issues and develop policies for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
