■ Event: Public discussion on the plan (draft) to allocate the 5G 28 GHz spectrum to new operators
■ Date: 14:00 Wednesday, July 5, 2023
■ Venue: Seoul EL Tower

The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), together with the Ministry of Science and ICT, held a public discussion on the plan to allocate the 5G 28 GHz spectrum to new carriers at 2 PM on Tuesday, July 11.

On January 31, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced the plan to support new carriers to enter the 5G 28 GHz market by allocating the 28 GHz spectrum. It then announced the “plan to promote competition in the telecommunication market” on July 6, and established the plan to allocate frequencies to new carriers to ensure that frequency allocation would not be an excessive barrier to entry to the market.

This public discussion was designed to gather opinions from experts and stakeholders on the specific frequency allocation plan (draft), such as allocation methods, fees, and conditions. It kicked off with a presentation by Jihwan Kim, director of the Radio Mobile Communications Future Strategy Center of KISDI, on "Mobile communications market and frequency status," and another by Jun-Hong Hah, director of Frequency Policy of the Ministry of Science and ICT, on the “plan (draft) to allocate the 5G 28 GHz spectrum to new operators."

In the free discussion that followed, experts from academia, research, and consumer groups participated as panelists, and the discussion was also broadcast live online on Naver TV and Kakao TV.
