■ Event: 2nd AI Ethics Policy Forum
■ Date: July 5, 2023 (Wed) 14:00
■ Venue: Seoul EL Tower

On July 5, the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), jointly with the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), held the 2nd Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Policy Forum (Forum Chairperson Kim Myeong-joo, Professor of Information Security Department, Seoul Women's University) at the EL Tower in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
The AI Ethics Policy Forum is a public forum for discussing the ethical development and utilization of artificial intelligence and collecting opinions on major policy tasks such as AI reliability verification and certification. The second-year forum was launched in April of this year, and thirty experts in various fields, including ethics, education, philosophy, and industries, are active as forum members.
As responsible AI innovation is being emphasized internationally due to the rapid spread of large-scale and generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, there is growing expectation that the AI Ethical Policy Forum should serve as a venue for discussions focused on raising awareness of the importance of AI ethics and creating a private self-regulatory environment.
The forum is composed of the ① Ethics Subcommittee (chaired by Jung-Wook Moon, head of the KISDI Center), ② Technology Subcommittee (chaired by Gang-Hae Lee, head of the TTA), and ③ Education Subcommittee (chaired by Professor Soon-Yong Byeon of Seoul National University of Education). During this Forum, each subcommittee presented ethical issues related to the use of generative AI and conducted in-depth discussions on ways to promote the use of large-scale and generative AI while ensuring ethics and reliability.

From the Ethics Subcommittee, Tae-Young Noh (a lawyer at Kim & Chang Law Firm) gave a presentation titled “The Use of Generative AI in Legal Services and Ethical and Legal Issues” in which he emphasized that generative AI, which can be used for legal consultation for private individuals or for the preparation of corporate contracts, is difficult to process sensitive information and explain about the calculation process, making it essential to consider safety, responsibility, and solidarity with its users.

In the Technology Subcommittee, Ji-Kwan Kim, a director at IBM Korea, delivered a presentation titled “What Enterprises Should Consider When Implementing Trustworthy AI” and suggested a number of issues that should be considered in three aspects: data, artificial intelligence models, and risk management systems. He emphasized the need for the government to provide guidelines that enable companies to clarify who owns and uses data and artificial intelligence models and to manage them accordingly.

In the education session, Ki-Young Kim, CEO of Artificial Society Inc., gave a presentation titled “The Current Status and Direction of Customized Education Using Generative AI” and emphasized that although the use of generative AI in the field of education is expected to increase markedly, review and evaluation by human experts would still be important since stricter ethical standards must be applied compared to other fields. He especially emphasized those aspects related to the integrity of learning data, securing copyrights, diversity, and strict human verification.
