The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, President Kwon Ho-yeol) will hold an online conference on the “Comprehensive Outlook for Korea in 2021” on December 17.

This event on the theme of “DATA, MEET THE FUTURE: Korea Demonstrated by 7 Indexes” will be hosted by the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Science (NRC) with the attendance of top experts from twenty research institutes under the NRC, as well as external organizations affiliated with the NRC. The event aims to diagnose the current status of the Republic of Korea using objective indicators for each field of the humanities, economy, and society, to seek future development strategies, and to present policy directions for the state administration.

In particular, seven data-based indicators for national and social development devised to create an inclusive nation through quantitative and qualitative shared growth will be introduced, along with the direction of national tasks and management strategies based on those indicators.

The seven indices are as follows: National Competency Index (Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training); Economic Vitality Index (Korea Development Institute); Quality of Life Index (Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs); Social Integration Index (Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs); Environmental Sustainability Index (Korea Environment Institute); International Contribution Index (Korea Institute for International Economic Policy); and National Inclusion Index (Korea Institute of Public Administration).

The “Comprehensive Outlook for Korea in 2021” will begin with an opening speech by the Chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Science, followed by congratulatory remarks by Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Chairman Cho Dae-yup of the Presidential Commission on Policy Planning and Chairman Chun Asaphyoung (Chun Young-il) of Statistics Research Institute, a welcome speech by President Kwon Ho-yeol of KISDI, special sessions on the seven major indexes, and presentations on the global future outlook and the future outlook of Korea.

The keynotes session includes “Evidence-Based Policy Cases in the United States” by Dr. Nick Hart (President of the Data Foundation); “The Impact of COVID-19 on the Global Economy” by Dr. Vincent Koen (Head of Country Studies, OECD); and “Overcoming the COVID-19 Crisis with the Digital New Deal” by President Moon Yong-sik of the National Information Society Agency.

In particular, Dr. Nick Hart will introduce the case of the United States for establishing a forward-looking policy based on statistics and data originating from the evidence-based policy of the United States, while President Moon Yong-sik of the National Information Society Agency will introduce case studies of the Digital New Deal and propose tasks for innovative growth.

While big data are considered the most important resource in the paradigm shift toward digital transformation, the seven indexes, devised by state-funded research institutions under the KISDI as a data-based decision support tool for guiding the direction of the state administration, will be introduced in the “Special Session on the Seven Indexes.”

The following session on the global future outlook will discuss global growth and cooperation to respond to the new normal amid the changes in the global technological, economic and security order, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and digital transformation, while the session on the future outlook of Korea will cover Korea's economy, industry, employment, etc., as well as the impact of COVID-19 on the financial soundness of self-employed businesses and companies.

"Predicting the future and overcoming the situation with strong government leadership is the starting point for saving people's lives, creating new industries, and raising the nation’s stature," said Chairperson Seong Kyoung-ryung of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Science. He added: “We will build big data by accumulating as much data from the public and private sectors as possible, and will form a large-scale cooperative community of AI and data science experts.”

The Comprehensive Outlook for Korea, 2021 will be broadcast live online at the official website (http://www.futureforecast.kr) and the NRC website (http://www.nrc.re.kr) in line with the strengthening of social distancing measures due to the spread of COVID-19.
