The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI, President Sangkyu Rhee) has recently released its Basic Research Report (24-05) titled “Industry-Specific Task Changes Following Technological Advancement.”

The report analyzes changes in work tasks and employment effects across industries resulting from technological advancement, using diverse datasets to draw meaningful implications.

With the rapid progress of technologies such as artificial intelligence, interest has grown in how these developments influence the labor market. Technological advancement can transform corporate tasks and ultimately affect employment, and such effects may differ across industries.

The analysis found that the impact of technological advancement on work and employment varies by industry and company size.

First, the effects of technological advancement observed through aggregate data showed that the degree of task change differed according to industry characteristics. In particular, during periods of significant economic shock, industries tended to experience task changes skewed toward either job creation or job loss.

Second, the analysis using firm-level data revealed that technology progress based on financial information—such as intangible assets and R&D expenditures—significantly increased employment across many industries.

Similarly, the effects of technological advancement on task changes were found to differ according to technology type, industry classification, and company size.

The report discusses several policy implications regarding the impact of technological advancement on the labor market.
